The God-Free Donkey Ballet was a puppet show written and performed by the Apple Cow Lips Theater at Littletree Orchards in May and September of 2023. Inspired by the idea of Peter Schumann’s pageants, the stage is set on the other side of a pond with some elements and spirits processing over the stage from, by, behind, above and beyond apple trees raws. Donkeys are predominantly leading the dance of this cardboard adventure. We are invited to follow their dreams in music through a montage of scenes. Interacting with some unfaithful gods, it fells into a deadly consumerist shopping dance, where our despaired donkey will need some help from the arms of grandmother tree and the spirits of nature. Hopefully, the celebration of honorable harvest will turn death into a consient joyful parade.

The show is a mediation on dreams, depression, our relationship to the earth, consumerism, truth, responsibility, and freedom. It was inspired by our reading of Braiding Sweetgrass by Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer, Futurability; the Age of Impotence and the Horizon of Possibility by Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi, and the Grimms Fairy Tale the Bremen Town Musicians. Shimmery Odyssey; Galileo into the Mouse of Truth is the journey of a truth seeker. Galileo, a small mouse, sails on board of her fantasy boat encountering a series of characters. Each of them meditating on the nature of their own truth. She will have intriguing conversations and face mysterious realities. The show is a surrealistic renaissance painting inspired by Bertolt Brecht’s Galileo mixed with Alice in Wonderland. The show will be performed as part of the Harvest Punch Festival at Littletree Orchards on September 14th, 2024.
